In 2007 The Conservation Alliance awarded $800,000 in grants to 29 organizations.
Adirondack Mountain Club (Lake George, NY) $20,000
The Adirondack Mountain Club is dedicated to the protection and responsible recreational use of the New York State Forest Preserve, and other parks, wild lands, and waters in the region. Our grant supports the ADK’s Save the Trails Campaign to limit the expansion of snowmobile and ATV use on hiking trails in the Adirondack Forest Preserve.
Alaska Wilderness League (Washington, DC) $30,000
The Alaska Wilderness League is the lead organization working to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil development, and the Tongass National Forest from logging. We made this grant to support AWL’s America’s Arctic Campaign to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil development. Our funds will be used immediately to fight a new proposal to open much of the Arctic Ocean to new offshore oil development.
Appalachian Trail Conservancy (Harpers Ferry, WV) $30,000
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is dedicated to preservation, management, and promotion of the Appalachian Trail as a primitive setting for outdoor recreation and education. We supported ATC’s Rocky Fork Tract Acquisition to purchase a pristine 10,000-acre wildland adjacent to Wilderness and roadless areas in Tennessee.
California Trout (San Francisco, CA) $15,000
CalTrout works to protect and restore California’s trout populations and the places they live. We supported the group’s Klamath Dam Removal Campaign to restore salmon populations by removing four dams on the Klamath River in Northern California.
Clayoquot Solutions Steering Committee (Vancouver, BC) $20,000
Clayoquot Sound is an iconic temperate rainforest on Canada’s Vancouver Island. The Clayoquot Sound Solutions Committee is committed to fight the renewed threat of logging in the forested area. Our grant support’s the committee’s Ancient Rainforest Campaign to secure permanent legislated protection for 148,000 acres of rainforest in Clayoquot Sound.
Colorado Environmental Coalition (Denver, CO) $30,000
Colorado Environmental Coalition works to protect Colorado's natural heritage and quality of life. The group’s Colorado Wilderness Campaign seeks to protect wildlands in Rocky Mountain National Park, Brown’s Canyon, and the Lower Gunnison River area. We made this grant in support of these wildland protection efforts.
Friends of Allegheny Wilderness (Warren, PA) $25,000
Friends of Allegheny Wilderness seeks to foster an appreciation of wilderness values and benefits, and to work with local communities to ensure that increased wilderness protection is a priority of the stewardship of the Allegheny National Forest. We made this grant in support of the group’s Pennsylvania Wilderness Campaign to secure Wilderness protection for 55,000 acres in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest.
Friends of the River (Sacramento, CA) $20,000
Friends of the River – California’s statewide river conservation organization works to preserve, restore, and sustain California’s free flowing rivers and streams. We supported the group’s California Wild Rivers Campaign to protect more than 300 miles of rivers and streams in California.
Klamath Siskiyou Wildlands Center (Ashland, OR) $20,000
Oregon’s Rogue River is one of the premiere whitewater paddling destinations in the West. KS Wild is an advocate for at-risk wildlife and forests in the Klamath and Rogue River watersheds of northwest California and southwest Oregon. Our grant supports the group’s Wild Rogue Campaign to protect 103 miles of river and 58,000 acres of Wilderness in the Rogue River watershed.
Montana Wilderness Association (Helena, MT) $30,000
Montana Wilderness Association works to protect Montana’s wilderness heritage, quiet beauty, and outdoor traditions by securing Wilderness protection for the state’s federal lands. Our grant supports MWA’s Beaverhead-Deerlodge Wilderness Campaign to permanently protect 570,000 acres of public land in southwestern Montana.
Nevada Wilderness Project (Reno, NV) $20,000
The Nevada Wilderness Project is committed to saving spectacular, rugged-and imperiled-public lands in Nevada as permanent Wilderness, the strongest protection possible. We supported NWP’s Desert National Wildlife Refuge Campaign to secure Wilderness protection for Nevada’s Desert National Wildlife Refuge.
Oregon Wild (Portland, OR) $30,000
Oregon Wild works to protect and restore Oregon’s wildlands, wildlife and waters as an enduring legacy. The group is leading the effort to secure federal Wilderness protection for federal lands around Mount Hood. Our grant supports Oregon Wild’s Mount Hood Wilderness Campaign to protect 128,000 acres of wildlands and 81 miles of rivers on the mountain.
Save Our Wild Salmon (Seattle, WA) $30,000
Save Our Wild Salmon seeks to restore abundant wild salmon to the rivers and streams of the Columbia and Snake Rivers. We made this grant in support of SOS’ Columbia and Snake Rivers Campaign to restore wild salmon populations in the Columbia Basin by removing four dams on Idaho’s lower Snake River.
WildSouth (Asheville, NC) $20,000
www.wildsouth.org empowers citizens to appreciate, defend and restore the native biodiversity of the Southeast through grassroots organizing, public education and legal advocacy. We supported the group’s Grandfather National Scenic Area Campaign to permanently protect 25,000 acres in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest.
The Wilderness Society-Idaho (Boise, ID) $15,000
The Wilderness Society of Idaho works to ensure that future generations will enjoy the clean air and water, wildlife, beauty and opportunities for recreation and renewal that wild places provide. We made this grant in support of the Owyhee Initiative Campaign to protect 500,000 acres of Wilderness and 300 miles of rivers in Idaho’s Owyhee Canyonlands.
Utah Rivers Council (Salt Lake City, UT) $30,000
Utah Rivers Council’s mission is to protect and restore Utah’s rivers and clean water sources for today’s Utahns, future generations, and wildlife. Our grant supports URC’s Wild and Scenic Rivers Utah Campaign to protect dozens of rivers in Utah under the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
Western Colorado Congress (Grand Junction, CO) $15,000
Western Colorado Congress organizes local people in support of conservation efforts throughout Colorado’s Western Slope. We supported WCC’s Greater Dominguez Canyon Wilderness Campaign to permanently protect 160,000 acres of public land in west-central Colorado.
Alaska Wilderness League (Washington, DC) $35,000
The Alaska Wilderness League is the lead organization working to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil development, and the Tongass National Forest from logging. We made this grant to support AWL’s America’s Arctic and Alaska Rainforest Campaign to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Alaska’s temperate rainforests.
Appalachian Voices (Boone, NC) $30,000
Appalachian Voices’ Mountaintop Removal Campaign seeks to build public support to end mountaintop removal coal mining in the Appalachian region. Our grant supported the campaign’s efforts to raise awareness of this issue both within the Southeastern US, and nationwide.
Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (Salt Lake City, UT) $25,000
Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is the lead organization working to protect Utah’s spectacular Redrock Desert. Our grant supported SUWA’s Off-Road Vehicle Campaign to protect wilderness-quality lands in the Redrock Desert from ORV damage.
California Wilderness Coalition (Oakland, CA) $35,000
California Wilderness Coalition is the only organization dedicated to protecting and restoring California's wild places and native biodiversity on a statewide level. Our grant supported CWC’s effort to protect 125,000 acres of wilderness in the California desert.
Campaign for the Snake Headwaters (Jackson, WY) $30,000
Wyoming’s rivers and streams support some of the healthiest fish habitat in the West. Our grant to the Campaign for the Snake Headwaters supports the group’s Wild and Scenic Rivers Campaign to protect the best remaining free-flowing rivers and trout fisheries in Wyoming’s Snake River drainage.
Raincoast Conservation Society (Victoria, BC) $30,000
Raincoast Conservation Society leads the effort to protect British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest. We supported Raincoast’s Marine Conservation Initiative to uphold the moratoria on oil & gas development and tanker traffic in and around the Great Bear Rainforest.
Conservation Northwest (Bellingham, WA) $50,000
Conservation Northwest works to protect old-growth forests and other wild areas throughout Washington and Southern British Columbia. We supported the Columbia Highlands Initiative to secure permanent protection for 360,000 acres of key wildlife habitat in northeast Washington.
Idaho Conservation League (Boise, ID) $50,000
Idaho Conservation League is the lead organization behind the Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness Campaign to secure Wilderness protection for 320,000 acres in Idaho’s Boulder-White Clouds Mountains. Our grant provides general support for that campaign.
Friends of Nevada Wilderness (Reno, NV) $25,000
Nevada is home to millions of acres of Wilderness-quality public lands. We supported Friends of Nevada Wilderness for their Save Nevada’s Wild Forests Campaign to gain protected status for 1.5 million acres of roadless areas in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
Arizona Wilderness Coalition (Tucson, AZ) $30,000
The Tumacacori Highlands is an 85,000-acre desert wildland in Southern Arizona. Our grant to Arizona Wilderness Coalition supports the group’s Tumacacori Wilderness Campaign to secure permanent protection for this special place.
Rivers Without Borders (Whitehorse, Yukon) $25,000
Rivers Without Borders works to maintain and protect fish and wildlife species and their habitat in the transboundary watersheds of Canada and Southeast Alaska. We supported the group’s Protecting the Wild Taku Campaign to protect important habitat in the Taku River Watershed in BC and Alaska.
Winter Wildlands Alliance (Boise, ID) $20,000
As motorized recreation increases in popularity, conflicts with non-motorized recreationists also increase. Winter Wildlands Alliance works with local partners to represent the nonmotorized community in resolving these conflicts. We made this grant to WWA to support the group’s Non-motorized Winter Recreation Advocacy to preserve a quality human-powered snowsports experience on public lands.
West Virginia Wilderness Coalition (Masontown, WV) $15,000
West Virginia Wilderenss Coalition builds public support for efforts to protect public lands throughout West Virginia. Our grant supports WVWC’s Monongahela Wilderness Campaign to secure Wilderness protection for up to 140,000 acres in the Monongahela National Forest.
