In April 2024, the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument was expanded by over 105,000 acres. Building on the momentum from the monument’s expansion, funders, businesses, and the State of California have come together to commit financial support to promote equitable access and sustainable recreation within the Monument. The efforts are being driven by the San Gabriel Mountains Community Collaborative, a group of over 50 members representing government agencies, nonprofit organizations, tribal representatives, and residents that was created in 2014. In particular, the proposed project will enable the Collaborative’s work with the U.S. Forest Service, government agencies, volunteer groups, Indigenous community leaders, and community members in the region. They will translate established Leave No Trace principles into culturally relevant messaging for the communities surrounding the Monument, including hiring a communications consultant to identify gaps and opportunities, develop a strategy, and pilot a culturally appropriate communications campaign.
