The Ruby Mountains encompass a large, undeveloped landscape replete with migration corridors and flyways, helping species move and adapt to changing conditions. The Ruby Mountains are home to one of Nevada’s largest mule deer herds. If development were to occur on this landscape, it could block wildlife movement—hindering the adaptability of migratory wildlife to changing conditions. The landscape also offers unparalleled recreation opportunities, including hunting, fishing, backcountry skiing, and hiking.
Multiple rounds of proposed oil and gas leasing throughout this landscape in 2017 and 2019 prompted Nevada’s decision makers to champion bipartisan legislation to permanently protect 450,000 acres for future oil and gas leasing. This legislation continues to be reintroduced but has failed to advance in Congress. Through its leadership role in the Sportsmen for the Rubies coalition, TRCP and its partners will demonstrate broad support for policy solutions that provide lasting protection for the Ruby Mountains.
