Organized in 1973 to stop the drowning of the Stanislaus River by the New Melones Dam, Friends of the River works to preserve California’s rivers. The organization’s mission is to educate, organize, and advocate to protect and restore California’s free flowing rivers, streams, and watersheds. FOR accomplishes this work by educating the public, media, and government officials about river conservation issues; mobilizing grassroots activists and local groups to affect change; building coalitions with traditional and non-traditional allies; and effectively advocating public policies that protect rivers.
