When outdoor enthusiasts blazed the first section of the Appalachian Trail in the early 20th century, they set in motion a tradition of civic engagement in trail building, conservation, and advocacy for open space that eventually became the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. The staff and volunteers of the Trail Conference are dedicated to protecting the nation’s oldest network of foot trails and the land that surrounds them. The Trail Conference now maintains more than 1,800 miles of trails from New York City and the Delaware Water Gap through the Shawangunks and Catskills and east to the Connecticut border.
