Homecoming: Land Rematriation and Buffalo Restoration in Texas

PROJECT NAME:
Homecoming: Land Rematriation and Buffalo Restoration in Texas
GRANTEE:
Texas Tribal Buffalo Project
RESULT:
149.5 acres protected

On June 24, 2025, Texas Tribal Buffalo Project welcomed community members for its first ever open house celebration to mark the acquisition of its new 149.5 acre property in Floresville, TX and the rematriation of buffalo onto this land. Alongside hayrides, conversation, and food, attendees were also able to see the first calf born on this land. Being able to bring buffalo home to ancestral lands is important to the traditions, health, and cultural practices of indigenous communities. They also help to restore the landscape, promoting grassland conservation, soil health, biodiversity, water retention, and reducing methane emissions.

The newly acquired land is within historic Lipan Apache territory and the historic bison range. The property, which had been held by the same family since the 1880s with intact mineral rights, was at high risk for development. After the owner approached Texas Tribal Buffalo Project (TTBP) about conserving the property, the organization partnered with The Conservation Fund to acquire it in February 2025. Conservation of this land will enable the organization to grow its herd and expand its community programming in close proximity to San Antonio, TX.
