In January 2025, President Biden protected over 224,000 acres by designating Sàttìtla Highlands National Monument in the Medicine Lake Highlands region in northern California. Located near Mt. Shasta, this monument preserves high value public lands, critical fresh water resources, and will further bolster California’s vibrant outdoor recreation economy. The well-being of the Highlands ecosystem and aquifers is essential to California’s climate stability, water supply, and its tourist economy.
The Medicine Lake Highlands have long been a target for energy development. This designation ensures that these areas sacred and precious to the Pit River Tribe and surrounding communities are not at risk of degradation from commercial-scale development.
TCA grantee, Mt. Shasta Bioregional Ecological Center and Trout Unlimited, worked alongside the coalition of local organizations, tribes, and businesses to advocate for the designation of Sàttìtla Highlands National Monument. The Conservation Alliance contributed advocacy support and a total of $40,000 in grant funding to this campaign effort.
